Layerbase is an independent database company building one tool for every database you run: locally, in CI, and in production. We are not a large team, and we would rather you know that than find out later. What follows is everything you would want to check before trusting us with your data, with dates you can verify.

How it got here

Layerbase started as a tool for one problem: running a real database locally without spending an afternoon on it. Everything since has been that same runtime, pointed somewhere new.

  1. July 2025

    Layerbase, LLC is formed

    The company is registered in Texas, four months before the first line of the product it is now known for.

  2. November 2025

    SpinDB

    The first commit of the local engine runtime: one command to install, start, and manage a database of any engine, without Docker.

  3. January 2026

    The CLI and the desktop app

    The engine runtime becomes two products: the layerbase CLI on npm, and a desktop app for people who would rather click than type.

  4. February 2026

    Layerbase Cloud

    The same runtime, hosted. Managed databases on flat pricing, built so that the local tool and the cloud speak the same language.

Common questions

Is Layerbase a real company?

Yes. Layerbase, LLC is a Texas limited liability company formed on July 15, 2025, based in Austin, Texas, United States, and it is the entity you contract with when you subscribe. It is independently owned, with no outside investors. The registration is a matter of public record with the Texas Secretary of State if you want to verify it independently.

How big is the team?

Small, and deliberately so. Layerbase is built and run by its founder. We would rather say that plainly than pad an About page with stock photographs and invented job titles, because you are going to work out the size of the company from your first support reply anyway.

How long has Layerbase been running?

The company was formed in July 2025 and the first database tooling shipped in November 2025. Layerbase Cloud, the managed hosting product, has been running since February 2026.

What happens to my data if Layerbase goes away?

Every engine we host is a standard open-source database, not a proprietary fork, so your data is portable by construction. You can take a full logical backup from the dashboard at any time and restore it anywhere that engine runs. There is no export tax and no format you would have to convert out of.

Is Layerbase open source?

SpinDB, the local engine runtime underneath the product, is source-available on GitHub. The cloud platform is not open source. The database engines themselves are the upstream open-source projects, unmodified.

How do I reach a person?

Support requests go through the support page and reach a person, not a queue or a first-line script. Press and partnership mail goes to support@layerbase.com and lands in the same place.
